Wawasee Gymnastics: Three Pairs In LaPorte
LaPORTE – The gymnastics season officially opened Saturday with the annual LaPorte Pairs event. Wawasee took its swings against some of the region’s finest, and got that first taste of the competition season.
The LaPorte format, which places two gymnasts together to average a score on all four disciplines, had teams from Wawasee, Chesterton, Crown Point, Portage, LaPorte, Logansport and Lowell competing. Wawasee’s top showing came from the pair of Aundreya Wegener and Alyssa Minnix, which took 11th overall as a duo with a 34.15 all-around score.
The duo’s top discipline was beam, where their score of 8.9 took fifth in the meet. Their bars score of 8.25 was eighth and vault score of 8.4 was 10th.
Reagan Atwood and Meghan Beer paired up and had the only other Lady Warriors score in the top 10, which was an 8.6 on vault, taking seventh. Katelyn Baker and Jada Parzygnot had their best score be an 8.55 on floor, good for 13th overall.
Chesterton won the Pairs title with 29 team points, having the second, third and fourth best all-around scores on the day, to which the team scoring was derived. Portage’s team of Michaela Drake and Bobbie Russell were the top duo of the meet, scoring a 36.8 combined pair score. Portage as a group were second in the team standings with 17 points and Crown Point were third at 10 points. No other team scored.ing
“Our first meet of the season went well,” stated Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “It’s good to get one under our belt. Now we can prepare for the Blazer Invite. We are hoping to see a marked improvement on all events by our next meet.”
Wawasee will next focus on the Dec. 30 Blazer Invite, hosted by Elkhart Central.
