John William Ramsey, Sr.
John William Ramsey, Sr., rural Akron died at the age of 78 at his residence at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15.
He was born on Sept. 26, 1939, in rural Fulton County to Verlin and Mabel (Hartzler) Ramsey and lived all of his life in the Akron area. He graduated from Akron High School in 1957. He married Midge Jernigan on Feb. 24, 1958, in Akron Indiana by Rev. Harold Conrad at the Akron Church of God.
John was the owner and operator of O & R Buildings, since 1965 and was still active in the day-to-day operations. He was a construction worker and a farmer. He enjoyed watching college basketball on TV. Some of his favorite sports teams were the Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers and whoever played against Notre Dame.
He was survived by his four children; Deborah Ramsey of Akron, John W. Ramsey, Jr. and spouse Penny of Akron, Verlin Ramsey and spouse Beverly of Akron and Mark Ramsey and spouse Nancy of Akron; one brother, Charles “Chuck” Ramsey and special friend Dixie Arter of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren, Angela (Ryan) Parson of Akron, Kent (Kelli) Ramsey of Akron, Shawna (Nick) Stutzman of Fort Wayne, Verlin (Crystal) Ramsey, Jr. of Fort Wayne, Daniel (Meghan) Ramsey of Pierceton, Adam (fiancee Taylor Peterson) Ramsey of Akron and Tabby Ramsey of Indianapolis; one step-grandson, Travis (Aylssa) Ramsey of Rochester and 15 great-grandchildren.
Preceding John in death are his parents, wife Midge on March 31, 2009, sister Eloise Hoehn, brother Jim Ramsey and a step-granddaughter Amanda Ramsey.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, at the Earl-Love Funeral Home, 811 E. Rochester Street, Akron, IN 46910. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, at the funeral home with Pastor David Eaton from the Akron United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Akron IOOF Cemetery, Akron.
