Park Board’s Final Meeting For 2017
SYRACUSE — Syracuse Park Board had its last meeting of the year Monday evening, Dec. 11. Park board meetings are open to the public and will continue to be at 7 p.m. the second Monday of every month in 2018. The meeting was spent looking over the breakdown of the 10-year maintenance plan and three-year budget.
With the 10-year maintenance plan in final review stages Pat Brown, SiteScapes, commented while it will be completed for the next park board meeting, it will never be fully finalized. It is a living document that will probably be altered every six months based on the needs of the parks department. The plan estimates what will need to be replaced or repaired, when it will need to be done and how much it will cost. By planning ahead for upcoming issues the board can see how it will impact the budget.
The plan gives the parks department opportunity to show the town council what they plan on working on over the years, giving ample preparation. In having projects laid out for the next six years, it gives the town and park board opportunity to approach those who may be interested in helping an upcoming project.
Board Member Mary Hursh inquired if something could be done to the kitchen in the community center, such as a double oven or an extra refrigerator being installed as she felt there’s a lot of use for it. Parks Superintendent Chad Jonsson replied without some sort of redesign in the electrical system not much could be changed as it wouldn’t be an easy fix to add more items in the kitchen.
Vice President Paul Newcomer commented while the electrical work is an issue so is the general layout of the kitchen. Kitchen renovations are not on the project priority list as it was never mentioned, but it could face quick reconstruction if there was a donation made in name of it.
Board Advisor Carol Koble reported after planning to buy a bench in memory of someone, Polywood decided to just donate it to the garden club. As there was still money available there are plans to buy a second bench. Jonsson added more benches will be added by the flagpoles in Lakeside Park to overlook the large flower bed in spring. People are welcome to make memorial donations for the benches.
Ongoing programs continue with judo and pickleball at regularly scheduled times.
Registration for the adult basketball league is open until Jan. 2, with fee is $275 per team and a 10 team maximum. The opening date is Jan. 7.
Free movie night will play “Despicable Me 3” at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15, at the community center.
Newcomer and Hursh’s terms end in 2017, but expressed to Jonsson they would like to continue to serve on the park board. The board motioned to recommend their continuation to the town council.
