Phillip Fleetwood Surface
Phillip Fleetwood Surface, 80, Mentone, passed at 9:45 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at Kosciusko Community Hospital of Warsaw.
He was born on June 7, 1937 in North Liberty, to Markwood I. and Alice Lucile (Starner) Surface.
He married on March 4, 1961 in Edgewood, where both of his grandparents officiated the wedding to Beverly J. Smith. She survives.
He retired as a foreman at Kimble Glass of Warsaw where he worked his entire career. He also enjoyed farming with Jim Wise and spending time in the fields during the spring and fall.
He graduated from Mentone High School in 1955. He was a member of the Mentone United Methodist Church and a former member of the Mentone Lions Club. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Brownsville, Texas and he volunteered there restoring many vehicles and planes for display in the Commemorative Air Force Museum. He always enjoyed fishing, woodworking, watching the Chicago Cubs, and attending many of his grandchildren’s sporting events. Many in the community knew him and lovingly called him Dad-Daddy.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughters: Sharon (Chris) Kindig, Mentone; Laurie (Harold) Carlin, Mentone; Teresa (Peter) Jones, Clinton, N.Y.; grandchildren: Krysta (Ronnie) Adams; Andrea (Scott) Rudicel; Nick Kindig; Eric (BIllie Jo) Carlin; Kasi (Adam) Ittenbach; Karissa (Brandon) Cody; Kenneth (fiancée) Hanna; Frances and Madeline Jones; 13 great grandchildren; also considered a granddaughter: Whitney Haneline; sisters: Alice Keirn, Warsaw; Linda (Larry) Sims, Honeygrove, Texas; Markee Adams, Mesa, Ariz.; brothers: Paul (Alice) Surface, Akron. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bobby Surface and a great grandson.
A time of visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 7 at King Memorial Home, Mentone. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at the home. Pastor Jason Rice will officiate. Burial will take place at Harrison Center Cemetery in Etna Green.
