Triton Football: Eight Trojans Receive All-HNAC Recognition
BOURBON — The 2017 All-Hoosier North Athletic Conference football lists were officially released Monday, and Triton was recognized for its banner season with eight total picks to the rolls.
Among those selections was Cameron Scarberry, a junior two-way lineman whose life was cut short in a car accident Sept. 17. The HNAC coaches voted to include Scarberry at their meeting the week of Oct. 20 in a move that touched Triton head coach Ron Brown.
“It really meant a lot to me that the coaches thought enough about us and our program that they would decide to nominate Cameron. It’s something that I didn’t even think about, but the collection of coaches were good enough to do that for us,” said Brown.
Making the All-HNAC first team list alongside their fallen teammate were fellow two-way lineman Connor Ousley, running back/ defensive back/ punter Max Slusser, wide receiver/ free safety Delano Shumpert, tight end/ linebacker Drew Stichter, wide receiver/ corner back/ kick and punt return teams player Tye Orsund and quarterback/ linebacker/ special teams player Bo Snyder, while linebacker/ running back Lee Mullett was given all-conference honorable mention.
The Trojans finished up their HNAC slate in third place with a record of 5-2 behind Knox’s 6-1 mark and unbeaten Class A state champion Pioneer’s unblemished 7-0 finish. Triton closed the year with a sterling 8-2 overall mark a game short of a Sectional 41 championship a year after scuffling to a 2-9 record in 2016.
“It was an exciting year to be a part of. It was a strange year, but I’m really proud of what the boys were able to accomplish and how the community supported us,” said Brown.
“I was looking at some other stats earlier this week, and I found out that we were the seventh most improved team in the state of Indiana. I didn’t realize that, but I think just shows how much these seniors and the underclassmen have put into wanting to have a successful football team. It was pretty obvious to the boys and to our team that the community rallied around us, and they were excited to be able to come out on Friday nights and actually watch a good product. We’re hoping to build on that success, and, if we’re lucky enough, to try to do the same thing and a little bit more next year.”
