Triton Girls Basketball: Lady Trojans Top Tigers, Lions For Home Tourney Title
BOURBON — Triton’s girls basketball team won its home tournament Saturday, beating Lebanon 43-35 in overtime in the semifinal before edging out Leo 39-36 in the championship game.
The Lady Trojans rallied back from a 19-12 halftime deficit with a 27-17 second half in the championship, including a 17-10 fourth frame by the hosts.
Whytnie Miller put up 16 points on the strength of 6 of 10 shooting from the floor as Triton (4-5) overcame the Lions in a game featuring four ties and four lead changes. Hannah Wanemacher finished with a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds to go with a team-high four assists ahead of Miller’s three as the Trojans tallied 11 helpers as a team. Miller also recorded four steals for Triton, which scored 17 points off 15 Leo turnovers.
Leo was paced by Sophia Pierce’s 14 points, seven assists and three steals, while Mckenna Dietsch notched nine points, and Brooke Smith pulled down 11 caroms.
The Trojans advanced to the championship by outscoring Lebanon 10-2 in overtime after regulation ended in a 33-33 draw, snapping a three-game losing streak by Triton.
Wanemacher knocked down a perfect 9 for 9 free throws on her way to a game-high 18 points and five steals, to go with five rebounds. Nicole Sechrist scored seven points, passed out three assists, grabbed a pair of steals and blocked a pair of shots for the home team. Miller and Charlotte Morris both scored six for Triton, which overcame a 10-of-42 shooting performance converting 21 of 24 free throws in the semifinal. Morris also grabbed nine rebounds in just her second game back from a knee injury, including five on the offensive end as the Trojans scored 11 second chance points and out-rebounded the Tigers 34-24.
Leading Lebanon was Tori Harker with 16 points and seven rebounds.
