Notre Dame Football: Hurricanes Hammer Irish
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Say so long to the playoffs.
That’s the case for the Notre Dame football team after the Irish took a 41-8 beatdown Saturday night at Miami.
Deejay Dallas ran for a pair of scores and the Hurricanes defense dominated as No. 7 Miami overwhelmed No. 3 Notre Dame 41-8.
“We didn’t see this coming, obviously,” said head coach Brian Kelly after the game.
“We felt like we were prepared to play at a high level. We did not. Simply have to coach better and have to play better next week against Navy,” Kelly continued.
Travis Homer rushed for 146 yards for the Hurricanes (9-0, No. 7 College Football Playoff), who forced four turnovers for the fourth consecutive week, led 27-0 at the half and handed the Irish their second-worst loss in the history of the Miami-Notre Dame series. Only the 58-7 Miami romp in 1985 was worse.
The key to the Irish loss was the critical turnovers.
Miami entered the night ranked 12th in the country at forcing turnovers and they were able to force four more against the Irish.
Before the game, Notre Dame outscored its opponents 108-10 off turnovers. The Irish lone loss prior to Saturday night was to Georgia in week two.
Miami outscored Notre Dame 24-0 off turnovers Saturday night.
Miami’s win came on the same day it clinched its first trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. The Hurricanes – who extended the nation’s longest current winning streak to 14 games – wrapped up the Coastal Division title when Virginia lost to Louisville, and will play Clemson for the ACC crown on Dec. 2.
And the Hurricanes might be in another title mix now as well, after dismantling a Notre Dame team that came in ranked No. 3 by the CFP committee.
Notre Dame, which saw its seven-game winning streak end, will have its home finale next weekend against Navy at 3:30 p.m.
