Michelle ‘Shelly’ Renee Magnus — UPDATED
Michelle “Shelly” Renee Magnus, 50, of Chicago, Ill., passed away at 11:06 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at her home after a five year battle of breast cancer. Born March 31, 1967 in Goshen, she was the daughter of Philip Howard Cripe and Carolyn Sue (Grimes) Emmert.
Shelly spent her childhood in North Webster and graduated from Wawasee High School with the Class of 1985. She was a cheerleader her Junior High years and three years of high school. She received her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in S.P.E.A. (School of Public & Environmental Affairs) with specialty in management in 1989. In 1990 she earned her first Master’s in Instructional Design at Indiana University and her second Masters was earned 1991 in Education at the University of Illinois, Chicago. On Oct. 26, 1996, she married Daniel Keith Magnus at St. Mary of the Angels, Chicago. Shelly had been an HR Trainer at Altschuler-Melvoin-Glasser Bank and Arthur Anderson and for ten years at Northern Trust Bank, all in Chicago. She first taught 7-8th grade for one year and for the past ten years she taught 6th grade math at Belding School, Chicago.
Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Daniel Keith Magnus, of Chicago; daughters, Natalie, Elise and Audrey Magnus, of Chicago; father, Philip Howard Cripe, of Goshen; mother, Carolyn Sue (Bob) Emmert, of Branson, Mo.; brother, Scott (Jill) Cripe, of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandmother, Gladys Cripe, of Goshen; mother-in-law, Doris Magnus, Chicago, Ill.; aunt and uncles, Linda Simmons, of Goshen, Michael Cripe, of Nineveh, Amanda (Kent) DeKoninck, of Greenwood, and Randy Grimes, of Columbia City. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Howard Cripe, maternal grandparents, Franklin and Laura Virginia Grimes and her father-in-law, Ray Magnus.
Visitation will be 11-1:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City with her funeral service at 2 p.m. Funeral Celebrant, Sharon Brockhaus will be officiating. There also will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 with a reception immediately following, both in the Erin Ballroom, Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N. Knox Ave., Chicago.
