Triton Football: Trojans Close Regular Season With Win At Winamac
WINAMAC — Four different Trojans scored touchdowns, and Triton put up a balanced rushing and passing attack in a 36-19 regular season-closing win at Winamac Friday night.
The Trojans (6-3, 5-3 HNAC) jumped out to a 15-0 lead with a 37-yard touchdown completion from Bo Snyder to Delano Shumpert and a 6-yard run by Ethan Berry, as well as a Brandon Lenker PAT and two-point conversion pass from Snyder to Tye Orsund. Max Slusser’s 16-yard run and the ensuing Lenker kick in the second pushed Triton out to a 22-6 lead after Kyle Chumley’s 30-yard run put the Warriors (4-5, 2-5 HNAC) on the board, and Jeb Smith cut Winamac’s halftime deficit to 22-12 with a 2-yard plunge in the second.
The home team threatened when Ethan Rogers found pay dirt from 57 yards out in the third period to pull Winamac within three at 22-19 with Dakota Agee’s point-after kick. But the Trojan offense answered back with a 2-yard TD run from Snyder, and Slusser scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter — a 14-yard run — that pushed the score to its final margin following Lenker’s fourth successful PAT of the night.
Snyder completed 11 of 18 passes with a touchdown and an interception as Triton finished with 194 passing yards. Slusser surpassed the century mark with 120 yards and two TDs in 17 carries as the visitors finished with 177 yards on the ground. By contrast, the Warriors ground up 326 rushing yards but threw for just 34 in the loss, Winamac’s first in three weeks.
Triton survived three turnovers in the win with an interception and two lost fumbles in a win over a potential Sectional 41 foe.
The Trojans finish up their Hoosier North Athletic Conference schedule in third place behind 7-0 Pioneer and 6-1 Knox. Winamac wound up sixth in the final HNAC standings.
Triton plays host to Caston in its tournament-opener next Friday at 7 p.m. The Trojans faced the Comets in conference play in Week 3, handing them a lopsided 50-13 loss.
The Warriors host South Central next week at 7:30 p.m.
