Leesburg Awarded Street Repaving Grant
LEESBURG — Monday, Oct. 9, at the Leesburg town council meeting, Leesburg council member Doug Jones gave an update regarding the Community Crossings street repaving grant.
Jones held up a grant award recipient certificate and announced, “We received money to do our streets.”
When Jones originally began checking into the grant, he was under the impression that the town would be responsible for a 50 percent match of funds. Upon further investigation, Jones learned that towns under a certain size qualified to have their portion of the payment reduced to 25 percent.
Phend & Brown, Inc., Leesburg, have been contacted regarding the street repaving work. The work is tentatively scheduled to be started this fall.
“We’re good to go,” said Jones, “The big thing we’ll have to do then is keep the roads maintained.”
Leesburg Council President Larry Richey expressed his appreciation, stating, “Doug did a lot of work on this and saved the town a ton of money.”
Leesburg Street Commissioner Craig Charlton submitted a monthly street department report. Charlton informed council members that he contacted Deputy Jim Smith from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department to inquire about patrolling the town of Leesburg due to speeding concerns.
“We have issues with people running the light uptown and the stop sign on Prairie Street,” said Charlton, “It’s really only occurring for about a half hour time period in the morning hours, but unfortunately that half hour is right when kids are getting on the school bus at the corner by the light. We need to get people to slow down. It’s a concern.”
Council members agreed, and a motion was passed to approve this.
Council members also passed a motion giving Charlton permission to obtain quotes and replace the front tires on the town’s Ford plow truck after Charlton reported that the front tires are down to the wear bars on the outer half.
Charlton and council members discussed implementation of a preventative maintenance program to ensure that all street vehicles and equipment are serviced regularly.
