Ridge, Westview Sew Up Sectional Titles
Heavy rain and lightning postponed a pair of area girls soccer games Saturday evening. Monday night, the party resumed for a pair of perennial soccer powers.
Northridge and Westview both finished off resumption matches, the Lady Raiders taking down Elkhart Central, 4-2, at the Goshen Sectional while Westview shut out Bethany Christian, 2-0, at the Bethany Christian Sectional.
Northridge and Elkhart Central left play in the second half of their match Saturday night tied at two. Central held a surprising 2-0 lead after Lauren Kollat scored followed by a penalty conversion by Keely Deuhmig. But a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the half by Ariana Stoltzfus and Sage Schnell leveled the score.
The game was halted with 36 minutes to go, and with the resumption of play, Leah Stacker pulled Ridge ahead with a strike in the 48th minute and Schnell added her second goal with four minutes to go. Northridge wins its fourth sectional title and third in five years.
Northridge (14-3-3) will need some kind of game next as it will take on No. 1 and defending state champion Penn at the South Bend Adams Regional. Penn (19-0-1) is also ranked No. 1 in Region V per USA Today and has only allowed two goals the entire season.
Westview took a 2-0 lead into the weather delay at Bethany and made it hold up Monday as neither team scored after the resumption of play.
Jodi Hostetler and Makayla Yoder each scored for Westview, which had ended Lakeland Christian Academy’s season on Thursday in a 3-1 result.
Westview moves to 9-9-1 overall and will meet Boone Grove (16-2-1) at the LaVille Regional.
