Grace Women’s Soccer: Faria Sinks Pilots
MISHAWAKA – Grace’s women’s soccer team earned a much-needed win with a 1-0 victory over Bethel on Saturday.
Flavia Faria scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Lady Lancers (4-5-3, 1-2 Crossroads League).
Despite dominating action throughout the match, Grace needed overtime to take down the Pilots (3-7-2, 1-2 CL). Allison Vroon created the action from the wing, cutting along the endline and passing to Faria. Faria took care of the rest, poking in her shot to the near post for the game’s only goal.
For the match Grace outshot Bethel 15-6 and had nine shots on goal.
The Lady Lancers were slow to produce offense in the first half, accounting for only one shot in the first 20 minutes. The game went into halftime scoreless as both sides shot four times.
In the second half Grace began to assert itself. The Lady Lancers outshot Bethel 10-1 in the period and played well to start the half.
Sacia Hanson tried a shot in the first minute of the half which went high, and Faria had a goal disallowed because of an offside call.
Midway into the half, Grace tried three shots from three different players (Autumn Raulerson, Liz Aalbue, Liz Van Wormer) which were all saved.
The Pilots were unable to take a shot for the final 24 minutes of the half, but Bethel was able to keep the game 0-0 by the end of regulation.
The match went into overtime where Grace’s first shot was the game winner from Faria.
Van Wormer’s three shots led Grace, and Shelby Fort, Vroon and Raulerson each shot twice.
Abby Schue picked up the shutout in goal, making five saves to keep Bethel scoreless.
The Lady Lancers are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Indiana Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. match.
