Warsaw Rolls On, LCA Knocked Out Of Soccer Tourney
Warsaw and Manchester continued on the path to greatness Thursday in girls soccer sectional action.
At Fort Wayne South Side, Warsaw continued to assert itself against Fort Wayne community schools with a 6-0 win over Wayne. The Lady Tigers had six different players score in the match, five of which did so in the first half.
Brenna Shipley started the mania in the eighth minute with a goal, followed by a Brenna Buhrt connection a few minutes later. Audrey Grimm and Abby Steffensmeier each connected on goals with Olivia Herman getting the rare penalty conversion opportunity late in the first half. A corner from Buhrt to Anna Grill in the second half capped the scoring.
Warsaw completes its second shutout of the tournament, Chloe Snow needing to make three stops.
“I was thrilled to see our team come out hard in the first five minutes today,” said Warsaw head coach Jon Hoover. “To not only score six goals, but to do it with six different players is a testament to the hard work the players put in on the field. I’m proud of our team and the style and joy they brought to the game tonight. We can’t wait to get a chance to play for a sectional title Saturday.”
Warsaw (12-4-3) moves to the final against Huntington North, which knocked out Homestead in penalties. The 18th-ranked Vikings (16-1) won the shootout 4-3 to advance after a 2-2 deadlock after extra time. The championship match will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday night at the old Elmhurst High School.
At Bethany Christian, Tori Calizo had Lakeland Christian Academy rolling against Westview, but the Warriors scored the match’s final three goals to oust the Cougars 3-1. Calizo scored on a redirect of Anna Reimink’s shot in the 16th minute to give LCA the 1-0 lead. Jodi Hostetler got the equalizer for Westview and Grace Miller put Westview up to stay with her goal in the 27th minute. A free kick goal late in the second half iced the game.
“I just can’t say enough how proud I am of our team this year,” stated LCA coach Nat Raber. “Tonight Westview played a faster paced game then what they showed verses Central Noble and really wore us down. The field seemed to gradually tilt as the second half wore on. I am very happy with the way LCA battled all night.
“I wish I could find some great excuse but there really isn’t any. It was a 2-1 game for majority of the second half, so we were right there with them. Westview was the better team tonight. I thought the officials were great this evening calling a physical game. I know our goalie would definitely like the first two goals back, but for Brady Gross’ first year playing soccer she did great.
“I look forward to building off of this season moving forward as this was the first time LCA had a girls soccer team in 10 years. We recorded their first-ever sectional win.”
LCA finishes its first IHSAA season 8-6 overall. Westview will march on to the final, meeting a Bethany Christian squad that shut out Elkhart Christian 4-0.
At Goshen, Northridge used another goal from Ariana Stoltzfus to knock out an opponent, this time Goshen in a 1-0 final. Stoltzfus scored the game-winner in the 38th minute, assisted by Izzy Love. The Raiders held Goshen to just three shots in the match. Ridge will get Elkhart Central in the final, the Blazers winning the battle of Elkhart, 8-2, over Memorial. Lauren Kollat had four goals for the Blazers.
At Fort Wayne Blackhawk, Manchester used two goals from Julie Dalsager and one from Carsyn Howard to defeat Woodlan 3-1. Gabbie Brewer had an assist for the Squires and Kiera Stacy made 10 stops for the win in net. The 20th-ranked Squires will meet No. 5 Blackhawk in the final after the hosts beat Fort Wayne Canterbury 3-1.
At LaVille, Argos and LaVille set up a final of ranked teams in the championship after both won Thursday. No. 12 Argos beat Bremen 6-3 and No. 2 LaVille ousted Rochester 7-1 to set up the power-packed final at Newton Park.
