Warsaw Library Debuts The Oculus Rift
WARSAW — Warsaw Community Public Library debuted the Oculus Rift Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the teen and adult drop-in zone events.
Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that allows players to become completely immersed in virtual worlds.
“It’s kind of unique for us to have it,” said WCPL IT Supervisor Tyson Barnett, “The state library is lending these out, but the waiting list is super long and they can only be borrowed for a limited time.”
Barnett said WCPL made the decision to purchase one, stating, “For us to actually have our own is a big deal.”
According to Barnett, the system can be used as an educational resource as well.
“The library has a 3-D printer, and there are actually ways you can design things in the virtual environment and then print it out on the 3-D printer, so there are education benefits to it,” Barnett explained, “It isn’t strictly for entertainment.”
The Oculus Rift will be available at the teen and adult drop-in zone events. The monthly events are held the first Wednesday of each month. Participants can play video games or watch a movie. Snacks are provided. Board games are also available.
Because Oculus Rift manufacturers do not recommend the use of this product to children under 13, the library will only be offering the use of the Oculus Rift to programs geared toward teens and adults. All players will be required to sign a liability waiver before being allowed to play. Teens under 18 must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Liability waivers are available at the adult reference desk or online.
