Tennis Wrap: Concord, Jimtown, Wood Doubles Team Advance
DUNLAP – Concord and Jimtown both used the same winning recipe to cook up tennis wins in regional semifinal play Tuesday night.
The Minutemen and the Jimmies each won at the same positions to pick up victories in the Concord Regional.
Concord will face Jimtown in the regional title match Wednesday at Concord at 5 p.m. The winner advances to the Homestead Semistate on Saturday.
The hosts and the Jimmies both won at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 2 doubles to eliminate Angola and Westview respectively by 3-2 finals.
Senior ace Will Boyer once again led the way for coach Todd Denton’s Concord squad. The four-year standout posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
The Minutemen also got a win from Nate Slabach, who prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The team of Grant Lucchese and Drew McDougle won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles for Concord.
Jimtown got a key three-set win from Holden Price at No. 1 singles action. Price rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win.
Ben Clarke notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles for the Jimmies and the duo of Nate Behrens and Preston Phillips won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Concord improves to 14-2, while the Jimmies sit at 19-4. Concord has won nine regional titles with the last coming in 2013. Jimtown has never won a regional championship.
The NorthWood No. 1 doubles team picked up a win at Concord Tuesday night in the individual portion of the state tournament. The duo of Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman of the Panthers beat Mike Bender and Luke Denton of Wast Noble 6-2, 6-1.
The Bethany Christian No. 1 doubles duo of Dustin Miller and Jonathan Young also extended their season by downing the Goshen team of Diego Torres and Ben Bontrager 7-5, 6-4.
The individual No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles play continues at Concord on Wednesday night.
