Film Reviews At Warsaw Public Library
WARSAW — Clearly one of the best superhero films made thus far would be “Wonder Woman.” It is a focused and purposeful film. The storyline, in a nutshell: Diana leaves her magical island of Themyscira, which is hidden from the rest of the world, to fight alongside men in a war to end all wars.
Gal Gadot kills it as Wonder Woman. Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) is exceptional as a sort of dude-in-distress. He has many scene-stealing moments, but he’s happy taking the back seat.
It has unforced humor, genuine star chemistry and, of course, a female main character. What more could one ask for in a superhero film?
The latest and fifth entry in the live action “Transformers” film series is like the others in that it is unmistakably Michael Bay. “The Last Knight” fails to reach the height of the series’ first two films, due in part to how much this film tries to accomplish, whereas the first two were simpler in narrative and easier to follow.
This time around, the Arthurian legend is co-opted by the ever-growing “Transformers” backstory, which has also roped in the reign of the dinosaurs and the space race.
None of what you see adds up to a gripping story (or even a semi gripping one), but the script’s constant spirit of cheesy invention gives this usually sober franchise a kick. Still, “Transformers:The Last Knight” is a fun, wild combat ride.
Just when Disney’s sea-faring, fantasy franchise seemed all set to sink comes a leaner, cleaner installment that easily qualifies as the best-paced and most enjoyable of the franchise. The story is a typical ‘Captain Jack Sparrow searches for a magical item while on the run from cursed pirates’ tale.
Just as I was beginning to think my beloved Johnny Depp had become an overrated performer, he managed to do what he does best and gave Captain Jack his all, conjuring just enough of what made his 2003 star-making turn so memorable.
Even though very little new ground is being hoed here, if you’re invested in all these pirate characters and their world, there’s no good reason to miss round five. Make sure you watch for the Easter egg at the end for a taste of round six. There is a sparkle of life in this franchise yet.
