Tennis Sectional Wrap: Jimmies, Falcons Advance; Concord Wins Title
At Goshen
Fairfield and Jimtown each punched their tickets to a finals clash with sectional semifinal wins in the Goshen Tennis Sectional Thursday night.
The defending champion Falcons beat Bethany Christian 4-1 and Jimtown stopped the host RedHawks 3-2 in action at Goshen Middle School.
Fairfield (11-9) will face Jimtown (17-4) at 4:30 p.m. for the sectional title and a spot in the Concord Regional next Tuesday evening.
Fairfield won all three singles matches in straight sets to top the Bruins. Aaron Streit won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 for the Falcons with Eric Gaby winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Dylan Kaufman posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3.
The Falcons also won at No. 2 doubles as the team of Jarin Bontrager and Ben Toole won 6-3., 7-5.
Bethany’s point came at No. 1 doubles as the duo of Dustin Miller and Jonathan Mousey won 6-3, 6-1.
Bethany closes out its season at 7-13.
Fairfield will be going for its second straight sectional crown Friday, while the Jimmies only sectional title came in 2009.
Jimtown also used a singles sweep to turn back Goshen. Holden Price won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 play to pace the Jimmies. Ben Clarke won 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 2 singles and Austin Pearson prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
Goshen, which finishes at 17-4, won at No. 1 doubles as Diego Torres and Ben Bontrager prevailed 6-4, 6-0. Goshen also took the No. 2 doubles match as the team of Drake Crowder and Tony Le won 6-2, 6-1.
At Concord
Host Concord rolled past conference foe Northridge 5-0 to win its fourth sectional title in the past five years.
The defending champion Minutemen won in straight sets on all five courts.
Will Boyer, the lone senior in the lineup for Concord, set the tone with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Boyer, a four-year varsity performer for the Minutemen, improved to 21-2 this season.
Nate Slabach noted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Freddy Buckingham won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles play for the champions.
Concord, which also beat the Raiders 5-0 during the regular season, won at No. 1 doubles as Travis Harmon and Caleb Whitaker posted a 7-5, 6-3 win. The No. 2 doubles duo of Grant Lucchese and Drew McDougle won 6-1, 6-1 for Concord.
The Minutemen, who won both the NLC regular season and tournament championships, advance to the Concord Regional on Tuesday night. They will face either Angola or DeKalb in a semifinal match. The Goshen Sectional winner will play the East Noble Sectional champion in the other semifinal. The winners will then meet Wednesday night at Concord to play for the regional title.
