Sentencing Stalled In Sexual Battery Case
WARSAW — The sentencing of Goshen teen Cameron Douglas Hunter, 18, was stalled today, Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Kosciusko County Superior 1 Court.
Hunter was booked at the Kosciusko County Jail on April 6 on a charge of count I sexual battery, a level 6 felony. The charges stem from events that occurred Sept. 8, 2016, when Hunter was still a minor.
Hunter’s attorney, Dana Leon, addressed Judge David Cates to inform him that Hunter has been unable to get an interview with Elkhart County Community Corrections.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Katy Hampton stated that Hunter has been charged with additional criminal activity in Marshall County.
“He has not acted toward obtaining approval at Elkhart Community Corrections. He has taken actions to prevent himself from being accepted at Elkhart County Community Corrections,” Hampton said.
Judge Cates said that, although he is not thrilled with the plea agreement, based on the information he has received he feels it may be in the best interest of the victim.
“Having said that, however, there is no way I can proceed with the plea agreement this morning,” Cates stated.
Cates ordered the sentencing to be continued at 10 a.m. on Oct. 2, cautioning that he expects to have information from Community Corrections by that date.
“Mr. Hunter, if I don’t have any proof on Oct. 2 as to whether or not Community Corrections will accept you, that will not bode well for my acceptance of your plea,” Cates said.
