NLC Tennis Tourney: No Surprises On Opening Night
DUNLAP – There were no surprises Wednesday night as the Northern Lakes Conference Boys Tennis Tournament opened play at Concord High School.
NONE.
The newly-refurbished courts looked great as did tourney favorites Concord and NorthWood.
Every seeded player also posted victories in the 16 first-round matches contested on a steamy day one of the three-day event. The opening round was a quick one too as all 16 matches were finished in straight sets.
Concord, which won the NLC regular-season title at 7-0, got wins from all four of its top-seeded lineup spots.
NorthWood, who went 6-1 during the dual meet portion of the league schedule, went 4-1 on the night.
Warsaw posted a 3-2 mark, including a dominating win by its top-seeded No. 1 doubles duo of Bailey Buhrt and Spencer Britton. The Tigers were 4-3 during NLC regular-season play.
Wawasee, which finished 1-6 in the NLC, went 0-5 on the evening.
The tourney continues tonight back at Concord with the finals set for Saturday at Plymouth.
NorthWood wasted no time in making sure that they will be in contention for tourney honors. The Panthers got wins from Wes Troyer and Jack Wysong in singles play and from its doubles teams of Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman and Trevor Klotz and Trajan Schwartz.
Sophomore Troyer showed guts and stamina to turn back Plymouth senior Tommy Holloway 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1 singles play. Southpaw Troyer showed smarts and guile to top the hard-serving Holloway, who rallied back from a large deficit in the second set to force a tiebreaker.
Sophomore Wysong notched a 6-4, 6-1 win over Warsaw sophomore Caleb Williams at No. 3 singles action.
The team of seniors Mast and Hoffman, the No. 2 seed, beat juniors Diego Torres and Ben Bontrager-Singer of Goshen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles play.
The duo of senior Klotz and junior Schwartz stopped the Plymouth team of junior Shawn Frantz and sophomore Dylan Voreis, Klotz and Schwartz are also the No. 2 seed in the No. 2 doubles bracket.
Goshen senior Simon Myers, the No. 2 seed, topped Ben Vincent of NorthWood 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles play. Freshman Vincent was replacing sophomore Landon Holland, who is sidelined due to an illness. Vincent was in the Panther lineup on Monday night during a 5-0 conference win at Wawasee.
Warsaw’s Buhrt, a senior, and Britton, a junior, made quick work of the Elkhart Memorial team of juniors Chris Troyer and Mike Troyer. The Tiger tandem notched a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Senior Colton Lind of Warsaw beat Memorial junior Brandon Bailey 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles play. The Warsaw No. 2 doubles team of juniors Nolan Knight and Reuben Williams topped the Memorial team of senior Pierre Archie and junior Lucas Knauss 6-3, 6-1.
Concord junior Nate Slabach, the top seed, beat Warsaw senior Kyler Bartol 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles action.
The host Minutemen also got wins from top-seeded senior Will Boyer at No. 1 singles, junior Freddy Buckingham at No. 3 singles and senior Jacob Shetterly and junior Drew McDougle at No. 2 doubles play.
Wawasee senior Dylan Staley lost 6-2, 6-0 to Northridge senior Simon Grevengoed at No. 1 singles. Northridge sophomore Gabe Rodino topped Warrior sophomore Zach Leedy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Northridge freshman Cooper Tavernier beat Wawasee junior Graham Perek 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Concord team of junior Travis Herman and sophomore Cal Whitaker defeated Wawasee senior Jake Cowan and junior Jake Krugman 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles play. The Goshen team of senior Tony Le and junior Drake Crowder topped seniors Evan Richey and Brady Robinson of the Warriors 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Also notching first-round wins Wednesday were Mitch Rose of Plymouth at No. 2 singles and Ryan Harmelink of Goshen at No. 3 singles play. Winning at No. 1 doubles was the Plymouth team of Clay Hilliard and Adam Hunter.
The tourney continues today at Concord, starting at 4:30 p.m. The final action will begin at Plymouth on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
