WACC Details Child Development Program
WARSAW — The Warsaw Area Career Center and the family and consumer science department are proud to offer three levels of child development to our students.
Students in the first child development class learn how to help children develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Other topics include genetics, prenatal development, child abuse and exploring what it takes to become a well-rounded parent.
The advanced child development class students gain knowledge and practice specific childcare skills weekly with their “reality babies.” This practice with computerized babies allows students to gain skills they will use to care for infants. Alicia Elder, a Lutheran EMS specialist, will speak to our students to review car seat safety and emergencies that they may encounter. Students will take these “Reality Babies” home for a weekend to experience what having an infant is like for a longer period.
Early childhood education, our capstone class, is an Ivy Tech Dual Credit course. Students apply what they have learned in the first two classes to work toward a degree in preschool, daycare and elementary school education.
Each of these classes teach students to understand and plan for taking care of children. This hands-on approach allows our students to gain great insight into the complicated world of parenting.
