Wawasee Sports Wrap: Sept. 16
Boys Soccer
Wawasee held the lead on multiple occasions before settling for an away 3-3 draw at East Noble.
Ryan Edington got Wawasee on the board with a goal assisted by Chris Pena. Eric Yankosky notched the second goal with a free kick beauty in the second half. Edington added the third goal on a penalty conversion, but the Knights, playing a man down after the penalty call, found the net late to tie the match.
Wawasee is 4-0-3 in non-conference matches this season after the result and 4-3-3 overall, but have a huge Northern Lakes Conference test Tuesday against Class 3-A No. 10 Goshen.
Wawasee lost both of its games at the NLC JV Invite, 6-0 to Plymouth and 7-0 to Northridge. The junior circuit is 0-9-2 on the season.
Volleyball
Wawasee won its final game of a tough Wawasee Invite on Saturday.
In pool play, Wawasee fell to Garrett 25-16, 25-22, Culver Academy 25-13, 25-20, and Columbia City 25-21, 25-15. In the consolation round, the Lady Warriors defeated Whitko 25-21, 25-18.
Stat leaders for the Lady Warriors included Tiffany Koble with 19 digs and 10 aces, Elizabeth Kleopfer with 20 assists and 12 kills, Peyton Rookstool with 11 kills and six aces, Bethany Flannery with 22 assists, Brooke Heche with 28 digs, Hannah-Marie Lamle with 11 kills and Courtney Larson with 10 kills.
Columbia City won the tournament by a 25-21, 25-23 count over Wabash. Culver Academy beat Elkhart Christian Academy for third place, and Garrett defeated Bethany Christian for fifth place.
The All-Tournament team were Wabash’s Brooke Irgang, Bethany’s Sadie Brenneman and Anya Kauffman, ECA’s Caroline Kitchen, Garrett’s Logan Smith and CGA’s Samantha Farrell.
Wawasee and Whitko will renew pleasantries on Monday.
Boys Tennis
Wawasee’s involvement in the NLC JV Invite was minimal, with just two players active. Colin Rhoades lost all three matches to Memorial (8-1), Concord (8-0) and Northridge (8-4). Clayton Firestone also lost his three matches, to Plymouth (8-1), Northridge (9-7) and Elkhart Memorial (8-4).
