Whitko Sports Wrap: Sept. 14
Boys Tennis
For the second time in a week, Manchester swept Whitko boys tennis, 5-0, in what was a non-conference matchup.
Manchester gave up just four games in the entirety of the win, with its No. 1 singles, Spence Trick, and its No. 1 doubles, Luke Donathan and Parker Wagoner, pitching shutouts against Nathan Smith and the teaming of Bryce Tucker and William Farmer.
No. 2 doubles Uria Hein and Drake Hatfield and the No. 2 singles, Logan Parrett, each won 6-1, 6-0 over Devon Akers and the tandem of Charlie French and Gary Wu. At No. 3 singles, Grant Strobel beat Aiden Hoffman 6-2, 6-0.
It was a complete Squires sweep in JV courts, with Kyle Shepherd, Quinn Martin and Kam Lester all beating Kaige Michael, OJ Lun and Isaiah Koher in 8-0 singles results.
“This annually scheduled second contest versus Whitko always provides an opportunity to see some guys at some different spots,” said Manchester head coach Eric Screeton. “We moved some singles guys to doubles and some doubles guys to singles. I was very pleased with the way our team handled the change.
“Now it is the time to start playing some of our best tennis. We have a tough stretch next week and we need to clicking before sectionals.”
Girls Golf
In the final regular season test for both clubs before the sectionals arrive, Columbia City shot a sharp 194 to beat its arch rival, Whitko, Thursday afternoon.
Led by Leah Bechtold’s 41, the Eagles were well ahead of Whitko’s 247.
Bailey Wright led the Wildcats with a 53, followed by Kayce Sims’ 62, and Makayla Compton and Erin Starkweather had 66s.
The two teams now shift to working on playing their best Saturday. Whitko will join the field at the Warsaw Sectional at Stonehenge while Columbia City will play in the East Noble Sectional at Cobblestone.
