Wawasee Sports Wrap: Sept. 14
Boys Tennis
Wawasee snapped a seven-match losing streak and picked up a Northern Lakes Conference win along the way with a 4-1 boys tennis victory at Elkhart Memorial Thursday afternoon.
Wawasee’s first NLC win of the season saw all three singles court get on track together. Dylan Staley won at No. 1 with a two and love win over Brandon Bailey, Zach Leedy at No. 2 topped Bradley Melendez four and one, and at No. 3, Graham Perek topped Richie Hoover one and three.
The Warrior No. 1 doubles team of Brady Robinson and Jacob Krugman bested Chris Troyer and Mike Troyer 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Memorial’s lone court win came from Lukas Knanss and Pierre Archie, which beat Jake Cowan and Evan Richey 6-1, 6-2.
Memorial claimed both JV matchups, with Duncan Learmal and Luke Leazenby both winning 8-2 over Colin Rhoades and Clayton Firestone.
Wawasee (4-9, 1-5 NLC) will host NorthWood Monday in its final NLC dual before the conference tournament begins next Wednesday. The NorthWood match is technically a home match for the Panthers, NorthWood without a home this fall while its tennis facility is under construction.
Volleyball
Concord maintained control of the NLC volleyball contest against Wawasee Thursday, winning 25-8, 25-9, 25-20.
Wawasee (1-13, 0-3 NLC) had Tiffany Koble dig 11 attempts and Elizabeth Kleopfer register four kills.
In the JV contest, Wawasee (8-6) rallied to win 25-18, 23-25, 15-11. Molly Jones had six kills and three aces, Madi Mottern had five kills, Ella Williamson had 13 digs and Ava Rush added eight digs and two aces.
Wawasee (12-2) got back on track in freshman volleyball, beat Concord 25-6, 25-8, 25-10. Catherine Ondrla had eight assists, five digs and four aces, Emma Dippon had six kills, three aces and a block, and Morgan Heche added 10 digs and six aces.
Girls Soccer
Wawasee ended a girls soccer slump Thursday with a 3-1 win at Elkhart Christian Academy.
The Lady Warriors (3-8) earned its first road win of the season by using a pair of goals from Sara Pritchard and an insurance goal from Jenny Camarena. Pritchard scored in the 30th minute, assisted by Olivia Birch, then found paydirt again in the 70th minute, Meghan Beer helping the cause. Camarena scored unassisted in the 75th minute.
Wawasee wraps up its non-conference slate and will take on the NLC the rest of the way, visiting Northridge Tuesday.
Football
The Wawasee freshman squad couldn’t catch Concord in a 20-14 loss. Meek and Kingrey each had touchdown catches for the Warriors.
Wawasee drops to 1-4 and will visit NorthWood next Thursday.
