Dead Trees Prompt Action At The Syracuse Boy Scout Cabin
SYRACUSE — The forestry surrounding the Syracuse Boy Scout Cabin, located along CR 500E, faced some logging and clearing. Around 70 dead and damaged trees were removed within a week despite rain delays. The logging makes the wooded area much safer for Scouts to camp out and walk the trails.
The safety aspect of the property is important. As trees grow and mature, they may blow into other trees and crowd the area as well as pose a danger to falling on the building the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Foundation built. The trees were strictly low-value trees that needed to be removed. With the bad timber gone, the Scouts will be able to use some left over for firewood and other projects.
“They do a fantastic job preserving the woods with minimal disruption,” commented Robert Smith, president of the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Foundation. “They do such a good job cleaning up too. They don’t just throw things around. They’re very careful in the way they do things.”
Matt Ridenour, owner of M&R Timber Management LLC., removed trees on at the Scout Cabin years before. Ridenour has been in the business around 15 years, working thoroughly and efficiently to carefully clean-up wild areas. The logging not only provides a safe place for people, but will allow other trees to grow and mature for years to come.
