Grace Tennis: Not A Single One
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s men’s tennis team won all three doubles’ matches against Spring Arbor on Tuesday.
But the Lancers (2-3, 2-3 Crossroads League) struggled in singles’ play and fell 5-4 to SAU.
Uros Pajic and Diego Zamora started the afternoon with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Danila Kurkulin and Caleb Yoder continued the momentum with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, and Adam Yoder and Conner Bates won by an identical score at No. 3 doubles.
Kurkulin, however, was the only Lancer to win a singles’ court over the Cougars (5-0, 5-0 CL). He claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the top singles’ position.
Arturo Fonseca at No. 5 singles narrowly fell in three sets, and his twin brother Lucas Fonseca also fought closely with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat at No. 6.
Tuesday’s match was reversed from the usual setup with singles’ matches first and doubles being played second. This was done to coordinate a doubleheader with the women’s contests.
“I’m very pleased with our doubles as we swept all three. Adam and Conner played really well and showed much improvement over the season,” said Grace assistant coach Andy Lewis. “Arturo lost a close three-set match which would’ve given us a win instead of a loss. I am glad to see our team continue to play a little better every match heading into the conference tournament.”
The Lancers end the week heading to the ITA Regional Tournament, held at Indiana Wesleyan starting Thursday.
