Wawasee Sports Wrap: Sept. 12
Cross Country
Wawasee used a pair of quality pack runs to clip Elkhart Memorial in both boys and girls cross country races Tuesday night.
The Warrior boys and girls both won by 23-32 scores over the Chargers.
On the boys side, Spencer Hare and Luke Griner finished stride for stride at the finish line, giving the Warriors a top two at 16:32. Michael Hammer was fifth at 16:58, Braxton Alexander sixth at 17:19 and Jace Alexander ninth at 17:38 for the Warrior scorers.
The girls from Wawasee got its pack up near the front for the first time all season, and reaped the rewards. Memorial’s Morgan Dyer won the race without challenge at 18:58, but Wawasee peppered the finish line from there. Kenzie Smith was second at 20:38, starting a flood of Wawasee finishers. Caitlin Wortinger was third at 21:24, Aubrey Kuhn fifth at 22:18, Reagan Atwood sixth at 22:22 and Valeria Pizana seventh at 22:33.
βIt’s nice to get a good team win, especially against a team that when we go into sectionals, could be in a battle with,β said Wawasee girls coach Doug Slabaugh. βI spoke to the girls about coming out and racing with some more passion, so hopefully we can use this as a catalyst and help us to continue to drop times. We improved 37 seconds from Saturday (at the Wildcat Classic) which was our best meet of the year. Now, we do have to continue to trust in the training as we can’t back off yet. We have to set up for the tournament series.β
Wawasee wraps up its dual season next Tuesday at Plymouth in a trip with the Pilgrims and Warsaw.
Girls Soccer
Things snowballed quickly for Wawasee’s girls soccer team Tuesday night against Columbia City. Trailing just 2-1 at the half, Columbia City hammered home five goals in the second half to run away with a 7-2 win at Wawasee.
Skye Roberts was all over the field for City (5-3-2), and made good on her work with four goals and an assist. Savannah Simmers netted a pair and assisted on another and scored a goal and had three assists. Mary Cotter added an assist for the Eagles.
Wawasee (2-8) had Sara Pritchard score in the first half, and Meghan Beer came back from an ankle injury and tucked home a penalty kick in the second half.
Next on the docket for Wawasee is Elkhart Christian Academy on Thursday.
