Henry “Hank” Mooi
Henry “Hank” Mooi, 90, of Rochester, Ind. formerly of Winamac, passed away at 8:08 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born on March 2, 1927 in Mount Greenwood, Ill., to the late Henry and Annie Mollema Mooi. On October 19, 1957 Henry married Alice M. Asmus in LaPorte. Alice survives.
Henry was a graduate of Tilden Tech High School in Chicago, Ill. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Henry served on three aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater and on one sea plane tender in the Atlantic theater. He was aboard the USS Cabot providing air cover during the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri. Henry was honored to meet and visit with Ernie Pyle shortly before Ernie’s death. Henry was proud to travel to Washington DC on a northeast Indiana honor flight in 2015. In 2016 Henry was honored with a Quilt of Valor for military service.
Henry was a retired farmer who specialized in raising gladiolas
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winamac and was a Life Member of VFW Post 1728 in Winamac, Henry enjoyed woodworking, traveling and fishing.
He is survived by his wide, Alice M. Asmus Mooi, Rochester, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Annie Mollema Mooi, stepmother Elizabeth Kelderhouse Mooi, brothers John and Herman Mooi, and sisters Tena Jongsma and Janette Regnerus.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Pastor Dave Marty officiating.
Visitation will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
Burial will take place at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac. The VFW and American Legion will conduct Military Graveside Services.
Memorial contributions made be given to the First United Methodist Church of Winamac.
