Warsaw Sports Wrap: Sept. 9
Boys Tennis
The Warsaw boys tennis team placed fourth in its own eight-team tournament.
The host Tigers had third-place finishes at three positions in the annual event.
Fishers totaled 28 points to win the team title. St. Joseph was second with 15 points with Munster third with 14 and coach Rick Orban’s Tigers fourth with 10. Fort Wayne Luers and Huntington North tied for fifth place with nine points each, followed by Crown Point (7) and Merrillville (3).
Caleb Williams of the Tigers earned a third-place finish at No. 3 singles play.
The Tigers also got third-place efforts from both of its doubles teams. The duo of .. and .. were third at No. 1 and the team of .. and .. were third at No. 2.
Colton Lind was sixth at No. 1 singles for Warsaw and Nick Marsh placed eighth at No. 2 singles for Warsa.
Thomas Pries of St. Joe was the No. 1 singles champion. He beat William White of Fishers 6-4, 6-2 in the title match.
Nic Knoderer of Fishers won the No. 2 singles title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Johnny Woehnker of Luers.
Marcus Luke of Fishers beat Brett Lotz of St. Joe 6-1, 6-2 for the No. 3 singles title.
The Fishers team of Ethan Fairfield and Sam Barrett topped Frank Wolf and Zach Schmidt of Munster 6-2, 6-1 for the No. 1 doubles championship.
The team of Drew Dixin and Shraven Suravarjjala of Fishers won the No. 2 doubles crown with a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win over the Munster team of DJ Fresko and Kathir Venkat.
Warsaw returns to conference play at Wawasee Tuesday night.
Girls Soccer
The Warsaw girls soccer team put forth a strong effort despite a 3-2 loss to Noblesville.
The Tigers led 2-1 at halftime before their guests scored twice in the final half for the win.
Anna Grill led Warsaw with a goal and an assist. Abby Steffensmeier also had a goal for the Tigers.
“We played some excellent soccer today against one of the better teams in the state,” said Warsaw coach Jon Hoover. “I thought we played very hard, but you could see the effect three games in six days can have. Our girls put themselves in a position twice today to win the game, but it just wasn’t meant to be. This was a great game for our program to be a part of…these are the teams that you’ll see late in the state tournament, and I think we are showing that we have the potential to do great things as the season rolls along.”
Warsaw drops to 6-4-1 overall on the season. The Tigers are 4-1 in conference play.
The Warsaw junior varsity lost 5-1 to Noblesville to fall to 2-5-1. Tobi Avey scored for the Tigers.
Warsaw hosts Fort Wayne Northrop Monday night.
Boys Soccer
The Warsaw boys soccer team picked up a 3-0 home win over Valparaiso.
Eric O’cock scored less than a minute into the match to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Blake Burns assisted on the goal for the Tigers.
Luis Cleo and O’cock then scored goals to give the Tigers the win. Tedious Berelsman assisted on the score by Cleo and O’cock scored his second goal on a penalty kick.
Warsaw improves to 7-3-2 overall on the season.
The Warsaw junior varsity won 2-1. Isaiah VanPuffelen and Aden Wade scored goals and Ethan Grill had an assist for the Tigers.
Warsaw hosts conference foe NorthWood Tuesday night. It will be Senior Night for the Tigers, who are 1-2 in NLC action on the season.
Volleyball
The Tigers had JV and freshman teams in action Saturday.
The JV were at Michigan City, advancing to the title game before falling to Michigan City. Warsaw lost to Penn in two, but came back to beat Valparaiso and Kankakee Valley in three. In the matchup with Michigan City, the hosts beat Warsaw 25-23, 25-17.
Top stats for Warsaw included Gwyn Bellamy with 32 kills and 27 digs, McKenna Hawblitzel with 48 digs, Evyn Mangun with seven aces and five blocks, and Kaia Hummitch with 14 kills and three blocks.
The freshmen hosted its tournament and reached the championship, but falling to rival Elkhart Memorial.
Warsaw steamed past South Bend Adams, Central Noble and St. Joseph’s in straight sets, then had an epic final against Memorial. Warsaw took game one 25-21, the Chargers game two 25-20, and in the final game, Memorial came out on top 15-9.
Stats from the tournament were not made available.
Lakeview Volleyball
The Lakeview Middle School 8th grade volleyball team won its own tournament.
Lakeview beat Tippecanoe Valley 25-11, 25-11, West Noble 25-14, 25-18 and Westview 25-8, 25-16 to claim the championship.
Wrigley Crabtree had eight kills and Abbie Porter had 29 assists and three aces for the winners. Tori Jones had four kills and two aces, Anna Gustafson had a kill, Kylie Smith had nine aces and five kills and Cora west had 10 aces and 17 kills. The trio of Emma Christenberry, Morgan Dyck, and Emile Schmucker were cited for their passing for the team.
The Lakeview 7th grade team also claimed the tournament title.
Lakeview beat Tippecanoe Valley 25-14, 25-16 as Mallory Mulligan had seven aces and five assists and Caitlyn Patrick had four aces and four kills.
The champs also defeated West Noble 25-20, 25-21 as Patrick had seven kills and four aces. Tessa Graney had four aces and three assists and Lauren Eastwood four aces.
Lakeview topped Westview 25-18, 25-21 as Patrick totaled five kills and seven aces and Graney had four aces.
The Lakeview 7th grade ladies are now 9-1.
Lakeview Cross Country
The Lakeview cross country teams competed in the Warsaw Invitational.
Mikayla Mimmaugh led the ladies with a 12th place finish in a time of 12:28.
Rylee Burns placed 15th in 12:40 with Kiersten Parker 41st in 13:39. Lizzie Miner was 89th (15:31) with Kylie Werensly 92nd (15:39), Rachel Doyle 97th (17:53), Gracie Willig 98th (17:59) and Maja Young 104th (19:52).
Edward Robinson led the Lakeview boys as he placed 20th overall in 11:31.
David Howard was 37th in a time of 11:59 with Levi Perry 45th in 12:15. Garrett Hall was 54th (12:21) with Jose Velaquez 66th (12:30), Carlos Velaquez 81st (12:53), Ricardo Verduzo 94th (13:47 and Carter Kreft 104th (14:51).
