NorthWood Golf: Panthers 18th In HOF Classic
WEST LAFAYETTE – The NorthWood girls golf team notched an 18th place finish in the Hall of Fame Classic Saturday.
The Panthers, who were ranked No. 19 in the latest coaches poll, shot a 373 in the loaded 20-team field at the Ackerman-Allen Golf Course on the Purdue University campus.
No. 1 ranked Westfield earned the team title, beating No. 2 ranked Zionsville on a fifth-player tiebreaker score. Both teams shot 312 in the tourney, which featured 14 teams ranked among the state’s top 20 squads.
Junior Mackenzie Weaver led the way for NorthWood as she shot a 91 on the par 72 layout.
Senior Madison Richner came in with a round of 92 for coach Adam Yoder’s team, which was playing in the event for the second straight year and the fourth time in the past seven seasons.
Junior Abby Slabaugh shot a 94, while freshman Abigail Richner had a 96 and sophomore Makenna Gall a 100 for NorthWood.
Columbus North finished in third place in the final team standings at 314. Homestead was fourth at 323, followed by Hamilton Southeastern (324), Carmel (326), Fishers (330), Brownsburg (326), Lafayette Jeff (338) and Valparaiso (338) to round out the top 10.
Kayla Benge of Plainfield earned medalist honors with an even par round of 72.
NorthWood returns to action Tuesday with a huge conference match versus host Goshen and Warsaw at Maplecrest. The Panthers and Warsaw are both 3-0 in Northern Lakes Conference play. NorthWood will then wrap up the league regular season at home versus Plymouth and Elkhart Memorial on Thursday, while the Tigers will host Concord and Northridge.
The NLC Tournament is set for Sept. 9 at Pretty Lake near Plymouth.
NorthWood went 7-0 a year ago to win the NLC title and then won the Warsaw Sectional championship. The Panthers, who have won at least a share of the NLC title for the past five years, have won 39 straight dual matches in league play dating back to 2011.
