Grace Volleyball: Lancers Take Two At Huntington
HUNTINGTON – To wrap up the opening weekend of the 2017 season, Grace’s volleyball team earned two sweeps on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (3-1) took down Robert Morris and IU East in straight sets at the Forester Invitational.
In the opening game, Grace’s defense dominated the Eagles (0-4). Robert Morris was held to a .038 hitting percentage as a team, and the Lady Lancers earned eight block points in the three sets.
Grace had 15 more kills and 15 more digs in the match, led by 13 kills from Kelsee Zuidema and 13 digs from Sara Miller.
The Lady Lancers had 15 kills on a .333 percentage in the first set and 12 kills in each of the final two sets. In the third set, Grace had 12 kills and just two errors in a dominant 25-15 win.
Alexa Hill had a double-double of 28 assists and 12 digs, Marta Bleed added 7 kills and 2 block assists, and Sierra Smith had six kills and three block assists.
Kari Feddema amassed five kills on 11 attempts, and Gina Novotny tallied nine digs.
The final match of the Forester Invitational was similar for Grace. The Lady Lancers showcased strong defense and a balanced attack to sweep the IU East. Grace had a plus-10 advantage in digs (44 to 34) and had five players with four or more kills.
Hill recorded 29 assists, propelling the Lady Lancers to a .286 team hitting percentage. Grace made short work of the Red Wolves (2-2), winning 25-14, 25-21 and 25-17.
Bleed led Grace’s offense with nine kills, and Zuidema and Smith each had eight kills. Feddema had 4 kills, 1 solo block and 4 block assists, and Savannah Hart tacked on four kills on seven attempts.
The back row trio of Caylie Teel (10 digs), Miller (8) and Novotny (7) muted the Red Wolves’ attack.
Next weekend, the Lady Lancers will host the Lancer Classic on Friday and Saturday. Grace will play four matches over the weekend at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
