Library Raises Non-Resident Library Card Fees
WARSAW — It was business as usual at the monthly meeting of the Warsaw library board of trustees Aug. 14.
Changes to non-resident library card issuance, including raising prices of non-resident cards, were discussed. Residents of the library district are issued cards with no fees because they support the library through taxes.
The library is required by law to charge a fee to non-residents. The fee charged is determined by the districts operating fund expenditure per capita in the most recent year. This is information is available in the Indiana state library’s annual “Statistics of Indiana Libraries.”
Current fees are as follows:
- annual individual fee: $86
- annual part-year (three months from issuance) individual fee: $21.50
- annual family fee: $215
Issued cards, aside from a part-year issuance, are valid for one year.
During the treasurer’s report, a new service was announced: Hoopla digital media service. Like most other digital media services, ebooks can be downloaded and read on computers or tablets. The service is complimentary to the libraries other streaming services available here.
Director Ann Zydek was excited to have attended a neuroscience training for Warsaw community youth workers on July 6. Warsaw Community Schools’ 2016-2017 strategic planning identified student wellness, including social and emotional wellness, as a top priority. Participants of the training learned how emotions affect learning behavior. Students and adults who feel angry, anxious, depressed or other negative emotions struggle with learning.
During her director’s report, Zydek also addressed some power issues that occurred. None of the occurrences were major and were quickly resolved.
In other business:
- The board approved a $2,000 stipend for Ann Zydek for the coming year for her work over the last several years. The board favored using a stipend rather than raising Zydek’s salary. The keeps the board from having to lower Zydek’s salary should the library take a financial hit.
- The board approved joining Indiana State Library Consortium for 2018-2019. This is done every year.
