Akron Speedway: O’Hara, Weaver Highlight Badlands Action
AKRON – Under an almost perfect setting, a pair of racers had a near perfect evening. Jason O’Hara and Audra Weaver won both of their race categories Saturday night at Akron Speedway, lifting themselves further up the points charts as the go kart racing season is winding down.
Weaver, just seven years old, has been on top of the Kid Karts and Rookie Junior Sportsman charts for a good portion of the race year. Saturday night, Weaver had little trouble taking care of business in the Kid Karts, zipping to the top spot ahead of Nevaeh Shephard.
In what amounted to the most anticipated race of the night, the Rookie Junior Sportsman feature had five competitors involved and four led for at least a lap. Weaver, who made a fantastic move on the inside to work from third to second midway through the sprint, took advantage of a restart to catch Ruger Lough and grabbed the lead, to which she would not give up the remainder of the race.
Weaver finished first in the Rookie Junior Sportsman, with Lough behind her in second and Gabby Rose taking third. All three of them, plus Candace Shepherd, led at least a lap of the feature.
O’Hara, a veteran commodity at Akron, continued to dominate the dirt track. The Super Heavy feature was all O’Hara, blowing away Andrew DeShong and the 83 cart was king again in the Senior Clone, besting Jeff Funk for honors.
Wrapping up Saturday’s action at Akron, Tracy Butt won the Open division, Chase Brandon claimed the Senior Flathead, Austin Burnworth won the Mini Wedges and Aiden Williamson won going away in the Junior 2 division.
A mechanics exhibition and powder puff race were also held to close out the evening, won by Bob Kamp and Tabitha Williamson.
