Man Wanted In Double Homicide, Turns Himself In
SOUTH BEND — A man wanted in the murder of two people is now in custody.
Police say 29-year-old Zachary Patten shot two people in Michigan and then took off. Late Friday morning he turned himself in to South Bend police.
Patten is being booked into St. Joseph County Jail, but eventually he’s expected to be extradited to one of the Michigan counties where the crimes occurred – Kalamazoo County and St. Joseph County.
We told a little before noon he went up to two South Bend police officers at the Martin’s Supermarket on Mayflower Road and said, “I need to be arrested.”
Patten is wanted in the death of a 31-year-old woman from Kalamazoo and a 29-year-old man in Constantine.
Police say he shot them both and took off.
Patten was taken to the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide unit for questioning.
Police say Patten didn’t know what happened to his two victims because he took off right after he shot them.
Police aren’t sure how long Patten will be held at the St. Joseph County Jail. We are told it could take up to a month until he is extradited back to Michigan.
