Hughes Sentenced For Dealing Methamphetamine
WARSAW — A Claypool man was sentenced today, July 3, for dealing meth last August.
Jeremy Wayne Hughes, 35, 1396 W. CR 800S, Claypool, pled guilty to dealing methamphetamine, a level 5 felony, and possession of methamphetamine, a level 6 felony.
According to police records, Hughes’ charges stem from an incident last August. On Aug. 23, 2016, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department witnessed Hughes exchange 1.4 grams of methamphetamine for $250. Hughes sold the drugs in a Dollar General parking lot. The officer field-tested the drugs and they tested positive for methamphetamine.
During Hughes’s sentencing, Hughes stated, “I take full responsibility for what I did.” Hughes mentioned had struggled with an addiction to meth for years, “I did what I did to support a habit.”
Hughes’ attorney Christopher Kehler requested that Judge Michael Reed structure a sentence that would allow Hughes to receive treatment for his addiction at a private facility.
Reed declined the request stating he did not believe that would be an effective method of treatment based on Hughes’ history.
Hughes was sentenced to three years at the Indiana Department of Corrections. He received 215 days of jail time credit for time served. Reed stated he would recommend Hughes for the Purposeful Incarceration Program, and if Hughes completes the program successfully Reed will consider modifying the sentence.
