Camp Mollenhour Prepares For Another Summer Of Fun
SILVER LAKE — School might be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Camp Mollenhour is a conservation summer camp that teaches boys and girls a variety of useful information that they won’t necessarily get in the classroom.
The camp introduces children, ages 9 to 15, to a number of educational projects like ATV, snow mobile and firearm safety.
There are also more traditional camp activities like swimming in the lake, fishing and archery.
Campers also have the opportunity to watch special presentations like a scuba diving demonstration or a presentation on birds like hawks and owls.
Camp Mollenhour Council Member Nathan Hooley says that the camp is better for kids than sitting through a Hunter’s Ed class or browsing the internet because the activities are more engaging and entertaining.
“The main focus is on outdoor activities … The kids get more time to handle things in these activities,” he said.
Hooley says that the camp is helpful for those who want to get their hunting license, but it goes beyond that.
“This is not just for kids who want to go hunting. It’s really all about safety. It’s the education they don’t receive in school,” he said.
The camp runs one program for boys and another program for girls.
This year, the boys camp will be July 9-14. The girls camp will be July 16-21.
There are 80 spots available for each camp, Hooley says that in the eight years he has been working at Camp Mollenhour, neither camp has been filled.
For those interested in the camp, there is a $225 fee with meals provided Sunday through Friday.
Hooley encourages people to look into the camp, no matter what the cost.
“There are organizations that might sponsor kids because they understand just how important this program is,” he said.
He also says that the camp is a great way to interact with peers, make new friends and learn new and useful skills.
