Helen B. McCreery
Helen B. McCreery, 94, and formerly of Portland, passed away May 18, 2017, in Warsaw.
She was born on May 9, 1923 and was the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Brown of Poneto. She married Robert H. McCreery on Dec. 21, 1947. He preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 2013.
She graduated from Ball State University in 1945, earning a B.S. She taught elementary school in Indianapolis, Evansville, and Jay County where she taught at Pennville Elementary, Redkey Elementary, and Judge Haynes Elementary. She retired from teaching in 1978. She was a member of the Associate Chapter of Tri Kappa and Zion Lutheran Church, and was previously a member of the Jay County Hospital Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann M. Oswalt (Jon D.), Hartford City, and Sarah B. McCreery, Warsaw, a brother-in-law James A. McCreery, Brandon, Miss., granddaughter Courtney A. Oswalt, Marion, and grandson Scott M. Wappes (Sylvia Tran, fiancé), Boulder, Colo., two nieces Lynn Shaw, Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Julie McCreery, Greensboro, N.C. and special family friends Larry and Maria Hiatt of Portland.
Graveside service at Six Mile Cemetery, Bluffton, will be on June 24 at 10 a.m. Memorials can be made to the Robert and Helen McCreery Scholarship Fund through the Portland Foundation at portlandfoundation.org. McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw is in charge of arrangements.
