Prep Baseball: St. Joe Among First-Time State Champs
INDIANAPOLIS – It was all about firsts for the first three games of the IHSAA Baseball State Finals Friday night and Saturday.
A trio of teams, including South Bend St. Joseph, all claimed their first state championship on the diamond in action at Victory Field.
St. Joe got a superb pitching performance from Michael Dunkelberger to blanked No. 2 Jasper 4-0 in the Class 3-A finale Saturday afternoon.
Dunkelberger fired a complete game three-hitter to lift the No. 9 Indians to their championship. The junior left-hander, who has committed to Indiana University, struck out four and walked two in his 96-pitch effort.
St. Joe, which defeated NorthWood 8-5 to win the Plymouth Semistate title on June 10, was making its first-ever appearance. Jasper was making its record 16th appearance at the State Finals.
The Indians scored two runs in the second to take the lead. Patrick Farrisee delivered a two-run single for St. Joe. St. Joe added two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error on the play.
Alex Voss went 2-3 and scored two runs to lead St. Joe, members of the Northern Indiana Conference.
The state championship was the second this year for St. Joe. Its’ girls basketball team, coached by former St. Joe star and Tennessee player Sydney Smallbone, won the Class 3-A state title back in March.
St. Joe is the first team from South Bend to claim a state baseball championship since Clay in 1970.
John Gumpf, whose wife Deanna is the Notre Dame softball coach, is in his 10th season as the St. Joe skipper. Gumpf, who is also the assistant athletic director at St. Joe, was drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Twins in 1989.
St. Joe wraps up its season at 25-4. Jasper, which has won five state titles and now has four runner-up finishes, is done at 30-5.
Evan Anders of Jasper claimed the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award for Class 3-A.
Lanesville 5, Rossville 1
Lanesville made school history with the first state championship in any sport with a 5-1 win over No. 3 Rossville in the Class 1-A finale Saturday.
Lanesville, which was the state runner-up in 2016, scored five runs in the fifth inning all with two outs. Evan Peele and Mitchell Bailey each cracked a two-run double in the frame for the champions.
Cameron Harvey pitched a three-hitter to lead the way for No. 8 Lanesville.
Lanesville finishes at 20-6, while Rossville is done at 24-9.
Matthew Homco of Rossville was selected as the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award winner for Class 1-A.
Cardinal Ritter 10, Wapahani 4
A big performance by Blake Malatestinic carried No. 3 Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter past Wapahani 10-4 in the Class 2-A title game Friday night.
Malatestinic fired a complete game on the hill to run his season mark to 12-1.
Ritter, which finished at 28-3, claimed its first baseball title in program history.
Ritter took a 6-0 lead with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth frame en route to the title. Ben Egenolf was 2-3 with three RBI for the champions.
Garrett Stanley was 2-4 with two RBI to lead Wapahani.
Wapahani, which finished at 19-12, beat No. 10 Whitko 6-0 in a semifinal game of the Wabash Regional on June 3.
Malatestinic was also given the L.V. Philips Mental Attitude Award for Class 2-A.
