Fretz, Barger In All-Star SB Classic Saturday
SYRACUSE – The duo of Meghan Fretz and Mike Barger will have one more chance to represent the Wawasee softball program this weekend.
Pitcher Fretz and coach Barger were selected to be part of the North All-Star team in the annual North-South All-Star Classic sponsored by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.
The pair will take part in the doubleheader set for Saturday at the Cherry Tree Softball Complex in Carmel. The first game begins at 10:15 a.m. with the second contest slated to start approximately 30 minutes after the opener.
Fretz had a monster season for the Lady Warriors, hitting .416/.465 with 37 hits, 43 RBI, 17 runs, nine doubles and six homers while striking out just five teams in over 100 plate appearances. In the circle, Fretz was 15-3 with a 1.67 earned run average with a WHIP under one. She struck out 142 batters, including a school-record 14 against NorthWood in late April, and had four shutouts.
Barger, a 2001 Warsaw Community High School graduate, led Wawasee to its 25-4 mark in his first season as the head coach. The Warriors went 14-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference for the first time in program history to win a third straight league championship.
Barger, who coached the previous two seasons at West Noble High School, directed the Warriors to a Class 3-A Lakeland Sectional title and the first regional crown in program history.
Wawasee ended its outstanding season with a 3-0 loss to South Bend St. Joseph in a semifinal game of the Twin Lakes Semistate.
