Other School Board Agenda Items
SYRACUSE — Other agenda items considered during the Wawasee school board meeting Tuesday, June 13, are as follows:
• Not all of them were present, but DECA members of Wawasee High School who competed in the national DECA competition in Anaheim, Calif., in late April were recognized. They include Mason Gray, Jared Krugman, Nathan Perek, Rosalie Garro and Jake Cowan.
• Neither were present, but WHS students Josh Webber and Anthon Anker of the social studies Academic Super Bowl team who won the state competition were recognized. Their coach, Mary Lou Dixon, is a school board member.
• Milford Kiwanis Club has been donating money to the lunch program of Milford School since December, resulting in 765 lunches and 201 breakfast meals provided for students.
• DEKKO awarded a $11,100 grant to be used for art projects. Brenda Stiver, art teacher at Syracuse Elementary, will receive $1,600 for an art in different cultures project; Kim Gause, art teacher at North Webster Elementary, will receive $600 for a glass sculpture project; Cindy Kaiser, Milford School principal, will receive $5,900 for the Milford Drummers; and Peg Zimmerman, music teacher at Milford School, will receive $3,000 for “the dancing drum” project.
• Kosciusko County Community Foundation awarded a $23,000 grant to the school corporation to be used to expand counseling services.
• Hans Griepentrog donated a boat and trailer to be used in the marine and powersports class of WHS.
• Syracuse Elementary School raised more than $12,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
• Overnight or out of state trips were approved for the WHS cheerleaders to Sandusky, Ohio, WHS cross country to Angola and WHS wrestling to attend a summer camp at Wabash College.
• Student handbook changes dealing mostly with attendance policies were approved for all of the schools in the district.
• A new six-year contract was approved with LearnZillion to provide the core curriculum for math in grades kindergarten through eighth. It is an online learning service.
• Joy Goshert, assistant superintendent, noted the parent portal to view spring ISTEP+ results will be open June 19 through July 7.
• Several personnel changes were approved including Troy Sausaman being named the alternative school coordinator for Wawasee High School. Michael Eshbach, who had filled the position, was transferred to physical education and health teacher at WHS. Jordan Sharp, who had been a health and physical education teacher at WHS, was transferred to teach the gone boarding class at the high school. Josh Ekovich was transferred from health and physical education teacher at WHS to physical education teacher at Syracuse Elementary.
