Syracuse Man Arrested For Counterfeit $100 Bills
SYRACUSE — A Syracuse man was arrested after he attempted to use multiple counterfeit $100 bills at a local gas station.
Jonathan Craig Mauk, 44, 10080 N. Turkey Creek Road, Syracuse, is being charged with counterfeiting.
An employee of a Syracuse gas station contacted the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department regarding a customer trying to use a counterfeit $100 bill. According to the employee, Mauk came into the store and presented a $100 bill to purchase cigarettes. The employee marked the bill and found it to be counterfeit.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Mauk then asked the employee to check six more $100 bills. Each of those bills tested positive as counterfeit.
The officer spoke with Mauk who confirmed the employee’s story. Mauk informed the officer that he had burned all but two of the bills and turned them over to the officer. He then told the officer he had cashed his paycheck at Lake City Bank on May 18 and was given those bills.
According to an employee at Lake City Bank, all money brought to the bank is run through a cash recycler, which does not allow for counterfeit bills to stay in circulation. The employee further stated that Mauk made no transactions on or near the days he provided to the officer. Furthermore, video surveillance was checked and Mauk did not appear at the bank or the drive-thru.
Mauk was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on June 5 with a $10,250 surety and cash bond.
