Baseball Sectionals Wrap: Goshen Moves On, Valley Ousted
Goshen pitcher Joey Peebles was on top of his game Thursday night.
He had to be.
Peebles outdueled Concord’s Jack Lietzan as the RedHawks blanked the Minutemen 1-0 in the opening game of the rain-delayed Class 4-A Elkhart Memorial Sectional.
Goshen (21-8) advances to play defending sectional champion Penn (21-5) at 10 a.m. Saturday in a semifinal contest.
Sectional action at Memorial continues tonight (Friday) with the hosts playing Northridge at 5 p.m., followed by Warsaw versus Elkhart Central. Those two winners will then meet in the second semifinal game on Saturday with the title game slated for Monday at 11 a.m.
Peebles fired a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks as Goshen beat Concord for the third time this season. The RedHawks topped the Minutemen 8-1 and 10-7 in a pair of Northern Lakes Conference regular-season meetings. Peebles improves to 5-3 on the hill.
Lietzan was outstanding for the Minutemen, He allowed just two hits, while striking out 12 and walking four.
Goshen got the game’s only run in the first frame. An RBI groundout by Michael Pinarski played Philip Wertz, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Quinn Miller had two hits for the Minutemen, who finish at 5-21.
Tippecanoe Valley saw its season end Thursday night with a 6-3 loss to West Noble in the Class 3-A NorthWood Sectional. The game was played at Wawasee, due to field conditions at NorthWood.
The Chargers advance to play Lakeland in a semifinal game Saturday at 11 a.m. Lakeland beat Fairfield 6-4 in the other first-round game Thursday night.
Wawasee will face host NorthWood in the second semifinal Saturday. The title game in Nappanee is set for Monday at 11 a.m.
Valley sees its season end with a 9-11 mark.
