Valley Sports Wrap: May 13
Baseball
Tippecanoe Valley added a high point to its baseball season, winning the Culver Academy tournament Saturday afternoon.
Game one went to Valley, a 7-4 win over Westview. A five-run third helped overcome a 3-0 deficit. Alec Craig threw the complete game, giving up three earned and fanning six.
Russ Paxton and Wes Melanson each had multiple hits for the Vikings.
In game two, Valley defeated the host Eagles 8-5. Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, Valley scored four runs to set up the title. Tucker Shull went five innings on the hill, giving up five hits and striking out four.
Craig and Adam Myers each had multiple hits for the Vikings, which move to 8-9 on the season.
The Vikings will visit Rochester on Monday.
Softball
Valley split its non-conference doubleheader with Central Noble Saturday, winning game one 12-7 and losing 15-3.
Abby Betten had a solo homer and RBI single and Kirstyn Yoder added a triple and two RBIs in the win.
Valley led 8-0 until the Cougars scored the game’s next seven runs. Valley responded in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to gain some comfort.
Sydney Howard got the win, going 5.1 innings of four-run ball.
In game two, the Cougars took off with the long ball. Annie Leonhardt jacked two homers and drove in five while Calista Rice added another homer and three RBIs.
Howard had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings.
Valley (9-13) begin a week on the road, starting Monday at Rochester.
