Whitko Tennis: Squires Come Back For Victory
NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester claimed a 3-2 win Tuesday over Whitko in a key Three Rivers Conference girls tennis showdown.
Whitko and Manchester split the first two courts, Jackie Werstler getting Whitko on the board with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bethany Collett at No. 3 singles, then the Squires No. 1 doubles team of Lydia Little and Kendra Auler beating Gracie Hook and Jessica Hook 6-2, 6-2.
Delaney Keirn would give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kelsey Eichenauer.
Newly paired Lauren Metzger and Rebecca Pyle would give Manchester the help it needed, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 rally against Jenna VanCuren and Manon Sonneville at No. 2 doubles.
Two of the top singles players in the TRC would decide it, and Morgan Keirn looked like she would run away with things after a 6-3 first set win. Up 1-0 in the second, Keirn would drop six of the next seven games to Karly Eichenauer, making for a 6-2 second set in favor of Eichenauer. Strong service bought Eichenauer some breathing room in the third set, affording a 6-2 win and the match.
The victory gives Manchester a 5-1 record in the TRC and a driver’s seat heading into the final week of the regular season. Whitko loses its second match to fall to 2-2 in the conference standings.
