Board Reviews Proposed Fire Station Improvements
The Turkey Creek Township Advisory Board Monday, May 8, reviewed the fire department’s list of renovations for fire stations 1 and 2.
Proposed improvements for Fire Station 1 included:
• Moving the base radio upstairs.
• Installing alert system speakers in the stairways, shower rooms, computer room and outside at the rear of the station.
• Installing an intercom system with additional phones.
• Installing a fire pole.
• Remediating the defective upstairs flooring.
• Replacing the meeting room carpet with “carpet squares that can be individually replaced in the future with minimal cost and labor.”
• Removing the first floor flooring in the foyer, hallways, bathroom, offices and EMS supply room and replacing it with Armor Tuff interlocking flooring. “The committee believes this flooring to be of much higher quality than the leftover tiles,” said Capt. Nick Stickel, building committee representative. “This flooring also has a lifetime warranty.”
• Replacing the sign in front of the building with “a new ground-level sign in the yard with a scrolling LED message board to provide information to the public.”
• Installing insulation between the first and second floor. “We contacted a heating and cooling representative and they advised this is a point of large energy loss in the summertime,” said Stickel.
• Installing either a truck-mounted or ceiling-mounted diesel exhaust removal system.
Proposed improvements for Station 2 included:
• Providing two means of upstairs egress. “We teach the public this concept and practice this on fire scenes,” said Stickel. “We should carry this into our own fire station.”
• Installing windows to take advantage of natural lighting.
• Installing walls and rubber flooring to house the department’s exercise equipment.
• Replacing the living quarters carpet; installing Armor Tuff flooring in the kitchen, hallways, office and bathrooms; and installing carpet squares in the sleep rooms, day room and upstairs.
• Repairing damaged drywall ceilings.
• Retrofit existing lighting with LED motion-sensing lights.
• Installing a washer and dryer. “This would allow us to wash and dry our linens at this station versus carting them to Station 1,” Stickel said.
• Installing either a truck-mounted or ceiling-mounted diesel exhaust removal system.
• Installing brick or stone wainscoting to the lower portion of the building “to give it an aesthetic appeal versus a pole barn look.”
• Installing new signage.
Township Trustee Barb Griffith presented the year-to-date budget. “There is nothing unusual this month,” she said. “Utility assistance is down as people are getting caught up with their bills.”
The township disbursed $525 in rent assistance, $1,251.03 for help with utilities and $149.96 for food.
The board will next meet at 7 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Syracuse Town Hall.
