Triton Sports Wrap: May 5
Baseball
Winamac stopped Triton’s eight-game winning streak with a 3-2 win Friday night.
Jack Degroot threw the complete game, allowing just four hits, one walk and struck out 12, sending the Trojans to its first loss since April 13. Degroot also had a good day at the plate, reaching base four times and scoring a run.
Triton used an RBI single from Dylan Hensley in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, only for the Warriors to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth, the get two more in the fifth off Hensley, who struck out seven and was saddled with just one earned run.
Lucas Newman sacrificed home a run in the seventh to pull the Trojans within one, but the tying run was left on base as Degroot got a ground out to end it.
Triton slips to 10-3 overall and 8-2 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference.
Softball
Winamac pounded the ball early and didn’t quit in a 13-1 final in five innings Friday night.
The Warriors scored four runs in the first inning, then came back with one in the third, three in the fourth and five more in the fifth to close out Triton. Winamac had 14 hits in all, four coming from Gabby Behny and three from Kelsey Crawford. Behny, Crawford, Rylie Maddox and Miranda Hettinger all doubled and combined for seven RBIs.
Courtney Jennings had two hits and the lone Triton run, driven in by Crystal Brown.
Winamac improves to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the HNAC while Triton falls to its fourth straight loss and a 6-7 mark, 1-2 in conference play.
Girls Tennis
Triton lost to Bremen 3-2 in the annual measuring stick meeting between rivals and potential sectional foes.
The two teams split doubles matches, Triton taking one doubles with Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross beating Lacey Bennitt and Maggie Whitinger three and love, while Bremen’s Bri Andrews and Lindsey Miller coasted past Kendra Morris and Kaylene Slabaugh one and one.
Liz Lawmaster won a close match at one singles over Kolbie Mason four and four while Emily Smith took a pivotal court at three singles against Siera Sauer three and four. Triton’s Quinn Downing grabbed a three and two win against Nicole Tomlinson.
Bremen won the JV matchups 4-0.
Triton sits at 6-4 overall while Bremen improves to 10-5.
