Betty Mardel Meehan
Betty Mardel Meehan, 90, of Columbia City, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Miller’s Merry Manor where she had been a resident since July 2016.
She was born November 24, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Ind. a daughter of Ralph Henry and Rosa Belle (Thurber) Work Jr. She completed her education at Central High School.
On July 6, 1949 she was united in marriage to Gerald Joseph “Bud” Meehan. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1974 when they moved to their home at Crooked Lake. Mr. Meehan died June 23, 2006.
A seamstress, she worked for Old Fort Draperies and did custom drapes for L.S. Ayres.
Her memberships included St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church and Eagles #1906.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Lynn (Mario) Diamente of Columbia City; three grandchildren, Marc Diamente, Michael Diamente and Laura Diamente; six great grandchildren, Alexa, Evan, Josh, Ava, Derek and Drew; a brother, Ralph H. Work III of Findlay, Ohio; and a sister, Rose Marie Brown of Chandler, Arizona.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Work; and three sisters, Wanda Maloney, Mary Ellen Beltz and Dortha Sigo.
The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8, at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 South Line Street, Columbia City with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
