Wawasee Track: Seeing Through The Smoke
SYRACUSE – The scores didn’t reflect the optimism Wawasee boys track head coach Scott Lancaster had for his team Wednesday night. In a pair of lopsided team losses to Goshen and Elkhart Memorial, Lancaster saw individual improvements that he hopes translates at the Northern Lakes Conference meet next Tuesday.
“We had a pretty good outing,” Lancaster said, whose team lost 101-31 to Goshen and 97-34 to Memorial. “Goshen really looked good and gave us a peek at what to expect from conference and sectional. They are strong in most events. Our 4×800 Relay got a good look at what it will take to advance in the state tournament series. The boys were around their season best.”
Goshen took the head-to-head with Memorial 82-50.
Wawasee had just one event win on the night, Luke Griner taking the 800 at 2:00.13. The Warriors had a trio of runner-up spots, the 4×100 (45.18) and the 4×400 (3:37.92) as well as Spencer Hare in the 3,200 (10:18.84), all points of note for Lancaster.
“Luke Griner continues to impress in running the 800 as he keeps his time down around the 2:00 mark,” Lancaster said. “Spencer Hare ran very well in the 3,200 tonight. Hopefully many of the good things we saw from our athletes tonight will will carry over to the NLC’s on Tuesday.”
