Wawasee Sports Wrap: April 26
Softball
Meghan Fretz was dealing darts Wednesday to Plymouth. Fretz one-hit the visitors in a 13-0 scrubbing by the Lady Warriors.
Fretz did issue four walks but struck out eight as Wawasee ran away with its fifth straight Northern Lakes Conference win. The senior was also part of the hit parade for the Lady Warriors, rapping two of the 13 hits for Wawasee. Fretz drove in three, one of four players with at least three RBIs.
Leah deSomer had a career-high four RBIs with two doubles, and threes were wild for Madie Wilson, who had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Graceanne Kerlin added two hits and three RBIs.
The Wawasee JV also pitched a shutout in a 10-0 win over Plymouth. Megan Bray had two hits and two RBIs and Madison Mottern added three hits and a run driven in.
Wawasee moves to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the NLC. Plymouth drops to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the NLC.
Wawasee will host Goshen Friday as both teams will participate in the Strike Out Cancer Together event.
Baseball
Plymouth scored 10 unanswered runs to thump Wawasee, 10-3, Wednesday afternoon at Bill Nixon Field.
After Wawasee’s three-run outburst in the top of the first inning, Plymouth scored five runs in the bottom of the first and didn’t look back.
Wawasee had Jacob Garcia, Rylan Kuhn and Gavin Barker each collect two hits. Kuhn doubled and scored a run, Barker had a two-run double and Garcia added a walk.
Ezra Winkle had the huge hit in the Plymouth first, a three-run triple as Plymouth batted around in the inning. Cam Dennie added a pair of RBI hits for the Pilgrims.
Josh Slabaugh took the loss for the Warriors, tagged for eight runs, giving up five hits and four walks.
Wawasee sits at 5-7 overall and 1-3 while Plymouth improves to 7-3 and 4-1.
