Large Fire Burns At Elkhart Landfill
ELKHART COUNTY— Crews are on the scene of a large landfill fire in Elkhart County.
The blaze is burning at the Earthmovers Landfill, owned by Waste Management, located just off of S.R. 19 and C.R. 26, south of the bypass.
Officials say the call came in around 3:35 a.m. from a police officer who spotted a small trash fire.
New photos were released by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Dept. (scroll down for slide show).
Our reporter on the scene says the fire could be seen from a long distance away and nearby residents said they could smell it.
There is no word on what may have started the fire.
Firefighters are working to put it out, but the fire’s large size and isolated location is making it difficult.
According to officials, no homes are in danger from the fire as it is contained to just the landfill.
