Kosciusko County Had Highest Number Of Deer, Vehicle Collisions In 2016
KOSCIUSKO — According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ 2016 annual report on white-tailed deer, Kosciusko County had the highest number of deer, vehicle collisions in the state last year.
The total number of deer, vehicle collisions in Kosciusko County was 405 crashes. Allen County had 401 crashes, Steuben County had 374 crashes, Porter County had 323 crashes and Noble County had 320 crashes. These top five counties all sit in the northern portion of the state.
Despite being the highest number in the state, Kosciusko County did see a drop of four percent in deer, vehicle collisions from 2015 to 2016.
According to the report, most deer, vehicle collision in 2016 occurred on state roads (36 percent), county roads (28 percent), and US routes (17 percent). Nearly 45 percent of deer, vehicle collisions in 2016 occurred between October and December. The total economic cost of deer, vehicle collisions in 2016 was $119 million based on the average estimated cost per collision.
